Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)

As the only globally recognized internal audit certification, becoming a Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) is the optimum way to communicate knowledge, skills, and competencies to effectively carry out professional responsibilities for any internal audit, anywhere in the world.

The CIA exam was updated in 2019 and is now available in multiple languages. With additional languages to be released in 2021, this is the perfect time to take a fresh look at CIA.

As a matter of fact, earning a professional internal audit credential is a critical step to being distinguished from your peers and will:

  • Enhance credibility and respect.
  • Sharpen skills and proficiencies.
  • Increase advancement and earning potential.
  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment.

Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA)

As the only risk management assurance certification for internal auditors, The IIA’s Certification in Risk Management Assurance® (CRMA®) program has been updated to reflect the in-depth organizational knowledge and advanced skill sets that are required to provide effective risk management assurance to audit committees and executive management.

Significant changes were made to the overall program, including expanding the prerequisites and making the required work experience more robust. For example, an active CIA® is now required. View an interactive demonstration of the question types included in the new CRMA exam. The new exam is offered in English only.

Earning the CRMA helps address the impact of risk and demonstrates you have the ability to:

  • Provide assurance on core business processes in risk management and governance.
  • Educate management and the audit committee on risk and risk management concepts.
  • Offer quality assurance and control self-assessment.
  • Focus on strategic organizational risks.
  • Add value for your organization as a trusted advisor.

Internal Audit Practitioner

To support students as well as new and rotational auditors on their journey into internal auditing, The IIA is pleased to announce the revised education and employment requirements of the Internal Audit Practitioner program. The Internal Audit Practitioner designation is a great way to demonstrate internal audit aptitude.

The changes to the overall program open a new pathway to the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) designation, the globally recognized certification for internal audit practitioners around the world.

Why Earn the Internal Audit Practitioner Designation?

  • If you are a student, graduating with the Internal Audit Practitioner designation reflects your commitment to entering the profession with the fundamental knowledge needed to begin contributing immediately.
  • If you are beginning your internal auditing career journey, obtaining this designation allows you to make a statement about your knowledge and aptitude as you progress through the CIA program.
  • If you are navigating through a rotational role, earning the Internal Audit Practitioner designation proves you have the foundational knowledge of the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing you will need to make the most of your experience.
  • If you manage an internal audit activity, the designation helps to demonstrate that your internal auditors are well-versed in internal audit basics and establishes a common foundation of skills and knowledge related to internal audit best practices.
